In todays society are we surrounded by different brands, companies and their logos. Some appear more than others. But what is a good brand and a good logo? Should there be a clear link between the company name, products and logos?
A company that we all know is Apple Inc. Their logo is an apple that someone has taken a bite of. Stylish, clean and easy. This apple can be found on all their products but if you think about it, there’s actually no relationship between an apple and technology, right?
There are many theories behind the name Apple. Some say that it was chosen to appear before the Atari in the phone book and others argue that apples were Steve Jobs' favorite fruit. Another theory is that the name is taken after the Beatles record label Apple Records ( Apple Computer and Apple Records have met each other in the courtroom on several occasions because of the right of name). It is said that there will allude to Isaac Newton's apple
Another company that came to mind was IKEA. Their logo consists of the company’s name and the colors blue and yellow. What is behind the name and logo?
It is no accident that the IKEA logo is yellow and blue; it's the same colors as the Swedish flag. IKEA says that the colors were chosen to show that this is a Swedish company but also because in Sweden the nature and your home are an important role in people's lives. One of the best ways to describe the Swedish interior design is actually to describe nature - lots of light and fresh air, yet restrained and unpretentious. What IKEA's product is said to stand for.
The name IKEA is not, what many believe a Swedish word, but a combination of the company’s founder Ingvar Kamprad's name and his home city’s name. IKEA therefore, comes from his initials (IK) plus the first letter of Elmtaryd (E) and Agunnaryd (A), which are the farm and the village where he grew up.
As you can see it is a difference between these two companies and brands, not only in terms of products but also when it comes to choice of name and logo of the company. Apple Inc’s name and logo doesn’t have , what I know of any association with their products, Steve Jobs’ name (possibly to his alleged love for apples), but until it's their logo, which is best known throughout the world. Maybe it is about the products in this case that attracts fans, but let’s not forgets that the name and logo are a part of a company and their marketing.
IKEA has a different story. The Swedish flag to indicate that it is a Swedish company, the name IKEA comes from Ingvar Kamprad's name and his life / home. IKEA is not as big as Apple Inc, but well known around the world. But the IKEA logo is convey the message that this is Swedish interior design. Perhaps it can be difficult to understand if you're not from Sweden, Scandinavia, or have a keen interest in interior design but there is a thought behind the name and logo. Apple Inc might have a story but not what I can find out on the Internet.
What I want to say by this post it's not always necessary to have a strong link between its products and its name and logo. In some cases it may be necessary; I mean to have a banana as a logo when you’re selling orange juice may not be the best.
