The Shamrock Shake

Dia duit! ('Hello' in Irish Gaelic)

You all know Wednesday was Saint Patrick’s day, and I hope you enjoyed at least one Irish beer to celebrate.

Our friends from the other side of the Atlantic always like to act differently. That is why watching the river turn green has been a Chicago ritual for nearly 50 years.

This year, Mc Donald’s took hold of this event and used it by the means of its new drink: the Shamrock Shake, a milk shake with menthol. The PR agency Leo Burnett placed a large-scale Mc Do’s cup "spilling" into the dyed green river.

The effect was impressive and the company really scored a point.

But do you think the image of a green river can be connected to a milk shake in people’s mind when it comes to the choice of a drink? Or isn’t it more about some kind of corporate communication? ("Wow, Mc Donald’s is so innovative and funny!")

Would you seriously fancy a milkshake pouring out into green water? I pass.
