Two days ago one of the biggest companies worldwide, Nestlé, insulted its Facebook fans by posting a threat: "If you don't stop using altered versions of our logo, your post will be deleted!". And they really did it after the violent reactions of users.
So... what's the problem? It's normal for Nestle to want to keep everything brand aligned, but you can't play by old rules in a new territory and especially when it doesn't belong to you, but to your consumers. They can't impose their marketing policy in an environment that sustains the freedom of speech, like Facebook does.
Up to now they are already 200 comments from revolted users and even though Nestlé already apologized and stopped deleting posts, the scandal has expanded for a long time on blogs and articles.
What's the lesson here? When you start being active in a environment like social media you have to be prepared for accepting the consequences of your actions and you should hire a professional to manage your accounts.
